Gorkhaland Debate: Statehood vs Autonomous Body
In the hills of Darjeeling, people want their own state called Gorkhaland.
A leader named Roshan Giri told a meeting that the Indian Home Minister, Amit Shah, said a new state is not possible right now.
Instead, Shah suggested a special area like Bodoland that would give the Gorkha people some self‑governance.
Giri also said that the government promised to give 11 Gorkha groups tribal status.
Many parties in the hills are still talking about how to solve this problem, and a new committee will be formed to keep the discussion going.
Roshan Giri revealed that Amit Shah said Gorkhaland statehood is not possible at present.
Shah suggested an autonomous body similar to Bodoland Territorial Region for the Gorkha hills.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha demanded tribal status for 11 Gorkha communities in a memorandum to Shah.
Multiple hill parties, including BGPM and GNLF, attended the meeting and agreed to form a new committee.
The Union Home Ministry has scheduled further meetings and appointed an interlocutor to study the issue.
