Why Mount Kailash’s Sacred Pilgrimage Faces Himalayan Flood Dangers
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra History: Why The Sacred Himalayan Journey Means So Much To Millions · news18.com

Mount Kailash is a very high mountain in Tibet that several religions consider holy.

Hindus connect it with Shiva and Parvati, while Buddhists associate it with the cosmic Mount Meru.

Jains and followers of the Tibetan Bon tradition also have sacred stories about the mountain.

Pilgrims usually do not climb Kailash.

Instead, they walk around it in a journey called a kora or parikrama.

The walk is about 52 to 53 kilometers and usually takes three days.

Some pilgrims also bathe in nearby Lake Manasarovar as a purification ritual.

Severe floods and a glacier collapse recently stranded or caused the disappearance of many people traveling through the region.

The disaster also damaged roads and border crossings used by pilgrims.
