Jinnah's reported despair over Partition: 'What have I done?'

A long time ago, in 1947, the Indian subcontinent was split into two countries, India and Pakistan.

When this happened, millions of people had to leave their homes and walk across the new border to a different country.

It was a very scary time, full of violence, and many people were hurt or lost everything they owned.

The man who helped create Pakistan was named Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

A story says that when Mr. Jinnah flew over the land in an airplane and saw long lines of families running away, he became very sad.

He put his hand on his forehead and said, 'What have I done?'

A journalist named Kuldip Nayar wrote about this in his book.

Mr. Nayar also saw very sad things on his own trip from Sialkot to Delhi, like empty suitcases and bags left on the road.

That is why people in India remember the horror of Partition every year on August 14.
