MP M. Gurumurthy Questions Government Over Fishermen’s Safety
Dr M. Gurumurthy asked the state government how it is protecting fishermen.
He was speaking after seven fishermen were rescued.
The fishermen had been stranded at sea for nearly 24 days.
Gurumurthy said boat accidents and missing fishermen are reported regularly.
He wants every fishing boat to receive a safety check.
He also wants fishermen to have life jackets, satellite phones and GPS trackers.
He said broken navigation equipment should be repaired quickly.
He also asked departments to work together and provide fishermen with training and financial help.

He cited seven fishermen from Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district who were stranded at sea for nearly 24 days before being rescued.
Gurumurthy said Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy raised the issue with the Union government and Indian missions in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
He called for safety audits of fishing boats, life jackets and other essential equipment.
He also sought satellite phones, GPS trackers, repaired transponders, better coordination, and training and financial support for fishermen.
