India Expands Frontier Security Through Vibrant Village Programme
India wants villages near its borders to become stronger and better connected.
Earlier, the government mainly focused on building physical infrastructure.
The Border Area Development Programme worked to improve connectivity and public services.
In 2023, India launched the Vibrant Village Programme for 662 villages along the northern border.
The programme supports infrastructure, jobs, tourism, education and government services.
In April 2025, the Union Cabinet approved a second phase.
This phase will cover 1,954 strategic villages along international land borders not included in the first phase.
The government says prosperous villages can also help make the borders safer because local residents can support border security forces.
