India’s Jobs Market Improves as Self-Employment Continues to Dominate
India’s job market showed some improvement in August 2026.
More people were taking part in the workforce, and the unemployment rate went down slightly.
Rural unemployment also decreased.
Many jobs came from small, unincorporated businesses rather than large companies.
People who own and work in their businesses made up most of this employment.
The share of hired workers in this sector fell compared with the previous year.
At the same time, hiring for office-based jobs increased, especially in AI and machine learning.
This means India had both more self-employment and stronger hiring in some formal job sectors.
India’s labor-force participation rate rose to 55.6% in August 2026, a five-month high.
The overall unemployment rate declined to 5.0% in August from 5.1% in July.
Rural unemployment fell to 4.1%, its lowest level since January 2026, according to the review.
Unincorporated-sector employment increased 6.55% year-on-year to 13.7 crore in April-June 2026.
White-collar hiring rose 14%, while AI/ML and fresher hiring increased 31% and 15%, respectively.
