India Unemployment Falls to 5% as Rural Jobs Improve
India’s unemployment rate became slightly lower in August 2026.
It fell from 5.1% in July to 5%.
Rural areas saw the biggest improvement, with unemployment dropping to 4.1%.
Cities saw a small increase, reaching 6.8%.
More people were working or looking for work, especially in rural areas.
The share of women taking part in the workforce also increased.
The share of people working compared with the total population rose to 52.8%.
These figures came from the Periodic Labour Force Survey.
The survey looks at what people did for work during the seven days before they were questioned.
India’s unemployment rate for people aged 15 and above fell to 5% in August 2026 from 5.1% in July.
Rural unemployment declined to 4.1% from 4.5%, its lowest level since January 2026, while urban unemployment edged up to 6.8%.
Overall labour-force participation rose to 55.6%, driven by an increase in rural participation to 58.2%.
Female labour-force participation increased to 34.8%, with rural female participation reaching 39.4%.
The Worker Population Ratio rose to 52.8%, while the Periodic Labour Force Survey covered 370,160 people.
