Doval’s Beijing Talks Test India-China Border Thaw and Engagement
Ajit Doval of India is visiting Beijing to discuss the border with China.
He will meet Wang Yi, a senior Chinese official.
This is the 25th meeting in a special process created to address the border dispute.
The meetings stopped for almost five years after a serious clash in 2020.
They restarted in late 2024 as the two countries tried to reduce tensions.
The officials will check whether an agreement to move troops apart has helped keep the border calm.
India and China have also restarted some flights, travel arrangements and pilgrimage activities.
However, they still disagree about the boundary, so the talks are important but may not solve everything immediately.
Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing for the 25th India-China Special Representatives’ talks on the boundary question.
Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are scheduled to meet on August 25, with Doval also expected to call on Vice President Han Zheng.
The discussions are expected to review the October 2024 disengagement agreement, de-escalation and border-management arrangements.
The talks resumed in December 2024 after a nearly five-year pause following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and eastern Ladakh standoff.
Improved ties include resumed direct flights, loosened visa rules, renewed pilgrimage and increased trade, but the boundary dispute remains unresolved.
