Padikkal Scores Maiden Test Century on Independence Day in Galle

Every year on August 15, India celebrates its Independence Day.

On this Independence Day, a cricketer named Devdutt Padikkal did something historic.

He scored his very first century in Test cricket, the oldest and longest format of the game.

A century means a batter scores 100 runs or more in one innings.

Padikkal finished unbeaten on 107 runs, hitting nine fours and one six, while facing Sri Lanka in Galle.

His knock made him the first Indian player ever to score a Test century on Independence Day.

The only other Indian to score an international century on that date was the famous Virat Kohli, in a one-day match.

Padikkal was playing because the usual batter in his spot, Sai Sudharsan, was injured.

It started raining, so the players paused with India at 239 runs for two wickets.

Padikkal has been in wonderful form lately, scoring 702 runs in his last 10 first-class innings at an average of 87.75.
