Rare Heart‑Liver Transplant Saves 27‑Year‑Old

Doctors at Artemis Hospitals performed a combined transcatheter heart valve procedure and living donor liver transplant on a 27‑year‑old man with acute‑on‑chronic liver failure and severe tricuspid valve regurgitation.

The patient’s wife donated the right lobe of her liver, enabling a successful living donor transplant after the heart valve was stabilized with a transcatheter tricuspid valve intervention (TTVI).

Conventional open‑heart surgery was deemed too risky due to the patient’s advanced liver disease and bleeding tendency, so a minimally invasive TTVI was chosen first.

Post‑operative recovery was rapid: the patient was weaned from the ventilator the first day, regained mobility, and was discharged in stable condition with only mild residual valve leakage.

Hospital officials highlighted the case as evidence of the need for coordinated care among transplant surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, hepatologists, nephrologists and critical‑care specialists.
