India makes a lot of the steel used to build things like bridges, roads and trains.

In the first four months of this business year, the country made 54.3 million tonnes of finished steel, which is four per cent more than last year.

People in India also used more steel because the government is building many big projects like highways, railways and ports.

India also sent much more steel to other countries this year, selling 35 per cent more than before.

A big Indian steel company called SAIL made a lot more profit than last year.

SAIL is also learning how to make special steel for naval ships and submarines through a technology agreement with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The company opened a new micro pellet plant in Rourkela that turns steelmaking waste into useful pellets instead of throwing it away.

The government says all of this shows India is on track to meet its big steel production target for the year 2030.
