NSE Debuts as Chauhan Calls Exchange Proxy for India’s Growth
The National Stock Exchange of India, or NSE, began trading as a publicly listed company.
Its chief, Ashishkumar Chauhan, said the exchange’s future is closely connected to India’s economic growth.
He called NSE an important part of India’s capital markets.
The listing brought many more investors into the company.
More than 3.4 million retail investors received shares, increasing the investor base to about 3.6 million.
The IPO sold shares held by existing owners rather than creating new shares for NSE.
Chauhan said the exchange would provide more information and remain especially careful about its responsibilities.
He also said new rules for derivatives trading may slow activity temporarily but would not stop long-term growth.
NSE Managing Director Ashishkumar Chauhan said the exchange’s fortunes are closely tied to India’s economic progress.
The stock-market debut expanded NSE’s investor base to about 3.6 million from roughly 200,000.
