Mela Mexicana Brings Mexican-Indian Fusion to SOCIAL Hyderabad
At a restaurant called SOCIAL in Hyderabad, grown-ups are having a special food party called Mela Mexicana.
It celebrates food from Mexico, a country far away.
Chefs are making Mexican dishes like tacos and quesadillas, but adding flavours that people in India already love.
This mix of two cuisines is called fusion food.
For example, a Chicken Tikka Tinga Tostada puts spicy Indian chicken tikka on a crunchy Mexican tostada.
A Mutton Seekh Taco wraps a tasty seekh kebab inside a soft taco.
Two head chefs made the menu together.
One chef, Shamsul Wahid, wanted the food to feel familiar and new at the same time.
Another chef, Ashish Sharma Diaz Del Castillo, lived in both India and Mexico, and remembered cooking from his grandmother.
The food party started in July and lasts until August 10, at SOCIAL restaurants all over the country.
SOCIAL outlets across the country hosted Mela Mexicana during July, a popup celebrating Mexican flavours, culture and community, running until August 10.
The menu reworks Mexican formats like tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, empanadas, chimichangas and tortas with familiar Indian flavours.
Chef Shamsul Wahid, Group Executive Chef at Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality Pvt. Ltd, says the dishes balance Mexican spirit with tastes Indian diners instinctively understand.
Chef Ashish Sharma Diaz Del Castillo, who spent time in both India and Mexico, drew on memories of his grandmother's kitchen in Mexico for the menu.
Highlights include the Chicken Tikka Tinga Tostada, Mutton Seekh Taco, Chicken Barbacoa Torta and Barbacoa Chicken Chimichanga.

Head chef of the pop‑up reflecting on blending cultures
“The balance came from understanding the spirit of Mexican food first, and then seeing how it could sit naturally on a SOCIAL table, adding, Mexican food has heat, acid, smoke, freshness, crunch, slow‑cooked comfort and a lot of hand‑held eating. These are things Indian diners also understand instinctively.”

“Authenticity is not about making something difficult to approach. It is about understanding why a dish or format works and then presenting it in a way that guests can enjoy naturally.”
