New Wage Ceiling Expands EPS Coverage for Some EPF Members
Some workers were already saving money through EPF but were not included in the pension scheme.
A new rule may now bring some of them into EPS.
They can qualify if their wages are no more than the new government wage ceiling.
The new EPF ceiling is Rs 25,000, up from Rs 15,000.
The rule was announced on September 25, 2026.
It applies from September 17, 2026, including an earlier period.
Workers do not need to make a separate application under the amendment.
They should still check their EPF and EPS records with EPFO.
The Labour Ministry amended the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 2026 to cover certain EPF members previously excluded from EPS.
Eligibility applies to members of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 2026 whose wages are at or below the newly notified ceiling.
The amendment was notified on September 25, 2026, but takes effect retrospectively from September 17, 2026.
The government recently raised the EPF wage ceiling to Rs 25,000 from Rs 15,000.
The amendment creates the eligibility category without requiring a separate application, although employees should verify their records with EPFO.
