Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 95; 1.6 Lakh Affected
Heavy monsoon rain fell on Assam, a state in India, and made the rivers overflow.
The floodwater has covered many towns and villages, and sadly 95 people have died this monsoon season.
Six more deaths were reported just in the last day.
More than 1.6 lakh people, which is a very big number, are affected across 563 villages.
The Sivasagar area is having the hardest time, with about 57,000 people affected.
The floodwater has ruined farmland, so farmers have lost their crops.
Many farm animals were also washed away by the strong water.
Rescue helpers used boats to save 80 people who were stuck in flooded areas.
Many people are staying in relief camps, and the government is giving money to families of those who died and to badly hit households.
Officials say the damage is so big that it will take a long time for life to get back to normal.
Assam's monsoon flood death toll rose to 95 after six more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the state's Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS).
Over 1.6 lakh people across 563 villages in 14 districts are affected, with Sivasagar the worst-hit district at about 57,000, followed by Golaghat (34,000) and Jorhat (nearly 25,000).
The Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger mark; seven major embankment breaches were reported, five at Brahmajan in Biswanath and two at Mangaldoi in Darrang.
About 16,952 hectares of farmland are submerged (one report says 16,951), more than 35,000 livestock are affected and nearly 8,500, most in Sivasagar, were washed away.
Rescue teams from SDRF and DDRF used boats to rescue 80 people, about 44,523 people are in more than 100 relief camps, and the government announced ₹9 lakh ex-gratia for families of the deceased.
