Bill Proposes $250,000 Fines and 10-Year H-1B Ban
A group of lawmakers has proposed a bill about employers who break rules for the H-1B visa programme.
The bill is called the H-1B Visa Fraud Crackdown Act.
It would make some penalties much tougher.
For serious violations, an employer could face a fine of up to $250,000.
The employer could also be barred from the programme for 10 years.
The bill has been sent to a House committee for review.
It is only a proposal, so these penalties are not in effect.
Congress and the President would need to approve it before it could become law.
Representative Beth Van Duyne and five other Republican lawmakers introduced the H-1B Visa Fraud Crackdown Act on October 1, 2026.
The bill would increase penalties for certain violations of the H-1B visa programme.
For serious violations, it proposes a maximum fine of $250,000 and a 10-year debarment period for employers.
The proposal would amend Section 212(n)(2)(C) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act and has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
The bill is not law and would need congressional approval and the President’s signature to take effect.
