Assam’s Maternal Mortality Falls Below National Average, VP Says
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan said Assam has made important progress in healthcare.
He said the state’s maternal mortality ratio is now lower than the national average.
Maternal mortality measures how many mothers die during pregnancy or childbirth for every 100,000 births.
He also praised India’s healthcare work during the past decade.

He said Assam now has more medical colleges and is building more.
A new cancer-treatment facility is also planned in Guwahati.

He attributed India’s healthcare progress over the past decade to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat.
Radhakrishnan said more than 44 crore Ayushman cards have been issued, helping families save an estimated Rs 2 lakh crore in medical expenses.
Assam’s medical colleges have increased from seven in 2021 to 15, with nine more under construction, he said.
At a convocation in Guwahati, he urged healthcare graduates to combine compassion, ethics and scientific excellence while avoiding substance abuse.
