A picture of a woman standing alone at a bus stop in Hyderabad late at night became very popular on the internet.

Many people thought it was a test to see if the city was safe for women.

The woman was actually a senior police officer named B. Sumathi.

She said she was just doing her job, checking areas that might need more protection.

She had been studying neighborhoods with many women's hostels.

Now she is the police commissioner for Malkajgiri, a busy part of Telangana.

Sumathi believes cities need better transport, lights, cameras, and caring services so women feel safe.

She also helps run special centers where people who have been hurt can talk to trained helpers.

She says police themselves must keep improving to keep up with the changing city.

The woman at the bus stop was not testing Hyderabad, she was learning about it.
