Telangana government steps up foundational literacy drive to boost outcomes

Leaders in Telangana, a state in India, held a big meeting at Osmania University to talk about how children learn to read, write, and do basic math.

These skills are called Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.

The person in charge of education, Yogita Rana, told everyone that these basic skills are the most important thing in school.

She said students are doing better, but not yet as well as the government hoped.

She asked the education officers to really understand the learning goals themselves, instead of just passing messages along.

She also said officers must visit schools regularly and check them carefully.

If a district does not prepare well, its leaders will have to answer directly to top education officials.

Some district leaders shared ideas that worked in their areas, like helping their districts rank among the best in the country.

Telangana moved up from 28th to 18th place in a national ranking of states.

Now the state wants to be one of the top 10 performing states next year.
