Maharashtra FDA Reports Surge in Medicine Complaints, Enforcement
Maharashtra’s drug regulator received many more complaints than usual between June and August 2026.
People complained about medicines sold without prescriptions and Ayurvedic products making claims that were not allowed.
The regulator investigated 924 of the 1,397 complaints.
It also inspected thousands of medicine factories and shops.
Some businesses had problems such as missing qualified staff, incomplete records, or medicines that did not meet quality standards.
The regulator suspended 677 licences and cancelled 203 licences.
It seized products worth Rs 11.41 crore and registered 20 FIRs.
The increased enforcement followed Tukaram Mundhe taking charge as FDA Commissioner.
Maharashtra’s FDA received 1,397 complaints from June through August 2026, a 557% increase over the 2025-26 quarterly average.
The department investigated 924 complaints, while seizures rose 217% and seized materials were valued at Rs 11.41 crore.
Officials said the most common complaints involved prescription-free allopathic medicines and unauthorised claims by Ayurvedic products.
The FDA conducted 2,902 inspections and took action against 880 establishments, including 677 licence suspensions and 203 cancellations.
The department registered 20 FIRs after identifying manufacturing and sales violations, including substandard drugs and incomplete records.
