Officials in Kakinada were told to make sure farmers have enough water for Kharif crops.

They were especially concerned about possible shortages during El Nino conditions.

Water was being released slowly to farmland supplied by the Yeleru Reservoir.

This area covers about 53,000 acres.

The district was also encouraging natural farming.

Millets and cereal crops were being grown using these methods on 7,000 hectares.

Officials said chemical fertiliser use would be reduced gradually.

They also discussed protecting canal bunds from encroachments and helping elected representatives solve local problems.
