Calcutta High Court: Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID Not Conclusive Proof of Citizenship

The Calcutta High Court recently stated that documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and Voter ID do not conclusively prove Indian citizenship.

These documents help establish identity, residence, or voting eligibility but not citizenship.

The court's observation came amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and recent remarks by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, does not list specific documents for proving citizenship.

Instead, the Citizenship Act, 1955, outlines different documents required based on how a person acquired citizenship, such as birth, descent, registration, or naturalization.

Therefore, while these documents can support a citizenship claim, they are not definitive proof.
