TMC duo resign from Malda Zilla Parishad leadership posts
Two leaders of a local council in Malda, called the Zilla Parishad, quit their jobs on a Friday evening.
Their names are Lipika Barman Ghosh and ATM Rakikul Hossain.
They belonged to a political party called the Trinamool Congress.
Some members of their own party did not want them to be leaders anymore.
Those members had asked for a special vote to remove them from their posts.
The two leaders were told they had to show that most members still supported them at a meeting on August 17.
Instead of doing that, they resigned three days before the meeting.
A leader from another party, the BJP, said this happened because of a fight inside the Trinamool Congress.
Now the officials in charge will decide what to do next.
Lipika Barman Ghosh, head of the Trinamool Congress-run Malda Zilla Parishad, and deputy head ATM Rakikul Hossain resigned on Friday evening.
The resignations came three days before an August 17 meeting at which the duo were required to prove their majority.
In July, 18 members of their own Trinamool Congress moved a no-confidence motion against the duo.
The Trinamool Congress won 34 of the 43 Malda Zilla Parishad seats in the 2023 elections; Congress won five and BJP four.
BJP MLA Amlan Bhaduri called the resignations a consequence of factional feud within the Trinamool Congress and said the administration will decide the next course of action.
