Maharashtra Issues 331 Notices in Marathi Language Drive
Transport officials in Maharashtra are checking whether autorickshaw and taxi drivers can speak Marathi well enough for their work.
On Monday, they checked many drivers in Mumbai and other parts of the state.
They gave notices to 331 drivers who did not show the required Marathi knowledge.
In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 139 drivers received notices.
In other parts of Maharashtra, 192 drivers received notices.
The checks began on August 20.
In five days, officials checked more than 35,000 vehicles.
The state says the drive is meant to enforce its Marathi language rule for commercial passenger drivers.
Regional transport offices issued notices to 331 autorickshaw and taxi drivers across Maharashtra on Monday.
Of the 1,392 drivers checked in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 139 lacked working knowledge of Marathi.
Outside the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, officials checked 3,415 drivers and issued 192 notices.
Over five days, officials checked 35,190 vehicles statewide and issued 4,729 notices.
The drive targets commercial passenger vehicle drivers who do not meet the state’s Marathi language requirement.
