Indian Markets Open Higher as Falling Oil Prices Lift Sentiment
Indian stock markets started Wednesday a little higher.
The main Sensex index rose by 0.30%, while the Nifty edged up by 0.03%.
Oil prices fell by more than 2%, which can help investors feel more confident.
Reports of another ceasefire between the United States and Iran also supported sentiment.
There were efforts to restart shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Banking shares, especially public-sector bank shares, performed well early in trading.
Metal, auto, healthcare, consumer goods and durable goods shares were weaker.
Analysts said the market could rise further, but high valuations and weak large companies may prevent a sharp rally.
The Sensex opened 236.01 points, or 0.30%, higher at 77,892.10, while the Nifty rose 7.40 points, or 0.03%, to 24,341.95.
Brent crude fell more than 2% to around $86 per barrel, while WTI crude traded near $80.10.
Nifty PSU Bank led sectoral gains at 1.4%, followed by Realty and MidSmall Financial Services.
Metal stocks were the top laggards, with the Nifty Metal index down 0.51%; auto, healthcare, FMCG and consumer durable shares also declined.
Analysts said lower oil prices and US bond yields supported sentiment, but stretched valuations and technically weak heavyweight stocks could limit gains.
