Meenakshi Temple Consecration Draws Thousands After 17 Years
A special ceremony was held at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai.
This ceremony is called Maha Kumbabhishekam.
Priests poured holy water over the temple towers and performed a special lamp ritual.
Thousands of people came to watch and take part.
Many devotees arrived the night before to get a place near the temple.
Holy water was also sprinkled on the devotees.
People could enter the main shrine for darshan after 10 a.m.
The crowds became very large, so police and temple workers guided people through different entrances and exits.
The ceremony happened after the temple was repaired and cleaned, and it was the first such event there in 17 years.
The Maha Kumbabhishekam at Madurai’s Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple was held on Thursday amid Vedic chants and large crowds.
Priests poured sanctified water on the Vimanams of the Meenakshi Amman and Sundareshwarar shrines before performing maha deeparadhana.
The main ceremony took place between 7:45 and 8:10 a.m., after Yagasala rituals conducted from September 11 to 16.
Devotees were allowed into the sanctum after 10 a.m., but large crowds gathered around the four Chithirai streets, requiring police crowd-control measures.
The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department completed 186 restoration works costing Rs 32.29 crore before the ceremony.
