Karnataka CM Seeks Longer Claims Window After 1.08 Crore Flagged
Karnataka is checking its voter list for mistakes and outdated entries.
About 1.08 crore voters were marked in categories such as moved away, deceased or duplicate.
This does not necessarily mean all of them were removed permanently.
The draft voter list has fewer names than the earlier list.
About 43 lakh people were also asked to explain possible problems with their records.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar wants genuine voters to have more time to respond.
He said moving, poverty, missing documents or lack of information should not stop eligible people from voting.
He also asked for more officials and local meetings to help people with their claims.
The final voter list is scheduled to be published on October 27.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar asked the Election Commission to extend the claims-and-objections period for the voter-roll revision.
About 1.08 crore electors were marked under absent, shifted, dead, duplicate and other categories, including 46.88 lakh in Bengaluru.
The state had 5,54,32,316 electors on June 16, while the draft roll published Monday listed 4,46,35,975.
Around 43 lakh electors received notices over logical discrepancies involving mismatches with 2002 electoral-roll data.
Shivakumar also requested more election officers, public outreach and additional time for voters to submit documents.
