Delhi Traffic Police Seeks Redesign of Barapullah Phase-III Merger
A new flyover opened in Delhi, but it joins an older road that has fewer lanes.
Several other streams of traffic join at the same place, so many vehicles must squeeze into a smaller space.
The roads also meet at a sharp angle, which makes merging harder.
A team from the traffic police and the Public Works Department inspected the junction on October 1.
Officials said the resulting traffic could make an almost 8-kilometre trip take more than an hour.
The traffic police asked the Public Works Department to redesign the junction.
Police also said Google Maps was not showing the congestion, so some drivers kept using the route.
To manage traffic, police said vehicles were being diverted towards NH-24 and DND.
The newly opened three-lane Barapullah Phase-III flyover joins a two-lane section of the existing corridor near Sundial Park.
Traffic from the Sundial side and from the Ashram and DND side also converges at the junction, creating a lane-capacity mismatch.
A joint inspection on October 1 found geometric and traffic-flow problems, including an abrupt, relatively sharp merger alignment.
Officials said commuters took more than an hour to travel the nearly 8-km stretch between Safdarjung Hospital and Sarai Kale Khan by Thursday evening.
Delhi Traffic Police asked the Public Works Department to redesign the merger; police also reported diverting traffic towards NH-24 and DND when congestion was heavy.
