Maharashtra FDA Seizes ₹1.94 Crore Fake Food Oil in Beed
Some people who sell cooking oil in Maharashtra were not playing by the rules.
They were taking cheap, low-quality oil and putting it into attractive bottles with labels that said 'refined' or 'ultra refined,' even though it was not really that good.
That is unfair to people who buy the oil for cooking.
So food safety officers, who work for a group called the FDA, went to check on the oil sellers.
They searched five shops and factories in Beed, Wadvani and Majalgaon.
The officers found more than one hundred thousand kilograms of oil that was being stored or repacked without permission.
They took the oil away and shut all five places down.
The officers also checked the cafeterias at a famous college called IIT Bombay, and they asked two of them to stop serving food because they did not have the right paperwork.
The FDA says it will keep checking to make sure the food we eat is safe.
The Maharashtra FDA raided five establishments in Beed, Wadwani and Majalgaon over the illegal repacking and storage of food oil.
Officials seized 1,19,186 kg of food oil worth around ₹1.94 crore from the five locations.
Oil from the same tank was allegedly sold under different labels such as 'refined' and 'ultra refined,' potentially misleading consumers.
The licences of all five units — Swagat Oil Industries, Charkha Oil Mill, Jai Hanuman Traders, Janvi Commercial and Vinayak Oil Mill — were suspended and the units sealed.
The enforcement push follows IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe taking charge as FDA Commissioner, and the FDA also ordered two IIT Bombay messes to halt operations for lacking required permissions.
