Republic Day aerobatics: Chicken to replace buffalo meat to keep skies clear of black kites during airshow · livemint.com

For the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi, the government is using chicken meat instead of buffalo meat to keep black kites away from the airshow.

This is because these birds can be dangerous for the low-flying planes.

The chicken meat will be given to the birds at 20 places in the city over 12 days.

This is done every year to make sure the airshow is safe and the birds are not harmed.

The meat is cut into small pieces and packed in bags.

The Indian Air Force works with the forest department to do this.

This year, they are using chicken because it is better for both the birds and the airshow.

“These locations are identified every year based on bird movement patterns. Areas such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid see a higher influx of kites, increasing the risk of birds straying into the flight path. By feeding them at designated points, we ensure they remain away from the air show route and also remain adequately fed.”

“This is an annual preventive exercise undertaken before the Republic Day air show. Birds such as black kites are naturally drawn to open areas and food sources, and if they enter the flying corridor, they can pose a serious hazard to aircraft performing low-level manoeuvres.”
