FSSAI action revives Old Monk history and General Dyer link

India's food safety regulator, FSSAI, told shops to stop selling three kinds of Old Monk rum.

FSSAI says these drinks contain flavoring that does not follow the rules.

Only those three kinds are affected, not all Old Monk.

Old Monk is a very famous dark rum in India that was launched in 1954.

But its story goes back much further, to a brewery started in 1885.

That brewery was founded by a man named Edward Abraham Dyer.

His son was General Dyer, a British army officer who ordered soldiers to fire on unarmed people at Jallianwala Bagh in 1919.

Many people were killed, and it became one of the darkest moments of India's freedom struggle.

After India became independent, businessman N.N. Mohan bought the company, which became Mohan Meakin and later created Old Monk.

So this beloved rum has a surprising and sad connection to history.
