IITs, IIMs and NITs Expand as Placements, Salaries Rise
A study by SBI Research looked at some of India’s top colleges.
It found that most students at IITs, IIMs and NITs get jobs after graduating.
Some students choose to continue studying instead of taking a job right away.
These colleges have grown in number and now teach many more students.
More women are also studying at these institutions than before.
The share of women is highest in the IIM data.
Salaries reported for graduates have risen considerably.
The figures suggest that these colleges continue to provide strong employment opportunities, although one reported enrolment total differs from the detailed table.
SBI Research estimates that about 93% of students across IIMs, IITs and NITs secure placements, with additional students pursuing higher studies.
The number of IITs, IIMs and NITs increased from 59 in FY14 to 76 by FY26.
IIM enrolment nearly doubled from 9,298 in 2017-18 to 18,243 in 2023-24, while IIT and NIT enrolment also rose substantially.
Women’s representation increased to 37.7% at the IIMs covered, 20% at IITs and 21.8% at NITs in 2023-24.
Median salaries in 2023-24 reached Rs 43.6 lakh at IIMs, Rs 36.1 lakh at IITs and Rs 20.7 lakh at NITs.
