Heavy Rain Floods Delhi, Snarls Traffic During Janmashtami

Delhi had a sudden spell of heavy rain on Friday.

The rain filled roads and underpasses with water in many parts of the city.

Traffic became very slow, especially near the airport and in low-lying areas.

People celebrating Janmashtami were surprised by the showers and hurried to find shelter.

Palam recorded the most rain among Delhi’s weather stations.

Strong winds at the airport briefly reached 76 kmph.

A fallen tree also blocked one road near Malviya Nagar.

Officials received waterlogging and power-related complaints, while the city’s air quality stayed satisfactory.

Key facts

Highest rainfall: Palam received 75.6 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.
Other rainfall totals: Safdarjung recorded 32.6 mm, Lodhi Road 34.6 mm, Ridge 20 mm and Ayanagar 12 mm during the same period.
Airport squall: A two-minute squall brought 7 mm of rain, winds up to 76 kmph and visibility of 600 metres.
Waterlogging hotspots: Affected locations included the airport area, Vasant Kunj, Mahipalpur, Mehrauli, Connaught Place, Minto Bridge and Pul Prahladpur.
Civic complaints: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received one waterlogging complaint, while the New Delhi Municipal Council received one waterlogging and four power-outage complaints.
Air quality: Delhi’s AQI was 71, classified as ‘satisfactory’ by the Central Pollution Control Board.
Road safety advisory: Delhi Traffic Police advised commuters to avoid the blocked stretch near the Gitanjali red light and use MB Road instead.
