Hundreds of Union Members Detained in Tiruchy Anti-Centre Protest
In a city called Tiruchy in Tamil Nadu, India, a big group of workers gathered to protest.
These workers belong to unions — groups of people who join together to ask for fair treatment.
They blocked a busy road, which is called a 'road roko.'
The police came and took many of the protesters with them.
The workers made a list of ten things they want the government to change.
They do not want new labour laws they feel are unfair to workers.
They also do not want the government to sell off public things like electricity companies, and they want an exam called NEET to be cancelled.
Similar protests happened in many other towns across Tamil Nadu.
This protest was held on the day people remember a big freedom movement called Quit India, from long ago.
The protesters hope that by raising their voices, the government will listen and change its policies.
Hundreds of trade union members were taken into police custody during a road roko at Main Guard Gate in Tiruchy, Tamil Nadu.
The protest was led by leaders of unions including AITUC, CITU, LPF, HMS, LLF, UTUC and the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam.
Demonstrators pressed a 10-point charter of demands, including the withdrawal of the four consolidated labour codes and cancellation of NEET.
Other demands included ending privatisation of the electricity network, PSUs and education, and cancelling free trade agreements with the US and European nations.
Similar agitations were held in Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts, marking Quit India Movement day.
