Tamil Nadu has decided to pay dairy farmers more for the milk they supply to cooperatives.

The price will increase by Rs 3, from Rs 41 to Rs 44 per litre.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the decision in the Legislative Assembly.

About 3.15 lakh dairy farmers may benefit.

Farmers said it has become more expensive to care for cows and buffaloes.

Costs include feed, medicine, veterinary care, workers and transportation.

The government says the higher price can improve farmers’ incomes.

The date when the new rate starts and its cost to the state have not yet been announced.
