UK Business Financial Distress Rises as Consumer Sectors Struggle
More than 53,000 UK businesses are facing very serious money problems.
Some have trouble paying bills, while others face creditor action or legal proceedings.
Many more businesses are under financial pressure but may still have time to recover.
Leisure companies, hotels, sports clubs, and food retailers are especially affected.
These businesses can suffer when people spend less money.
They are also dealing with high operating costs and debt.
Businesses may try to refinance, cut costs, or reorganize to survive.
The figures do not mean all these companies will close, but they show that many have little room for another economic shock.
The number of UK businesses in critical financial distress rose 9% year-on-year to 53,756 in the three months to June.
Leisure and culture, hotels, sports clubs, and food retailers recorded some of the sharpest increases in critical distress.
A further 674,030 businesses were in significant financial distress, up 1.1% from a year earlier.
BTG said businesses were considering restructuring and refinancing amid weak demand, high costs, and debt pressures.
London recorded the highest totals, including 204,851 businesses in significant distress and 17,718 in critical distress.
