Mumbai Hospital Reports 175 Paediatric Epilepsy Surgeries, Targets 200

Some children have epilepsy that does not improve after taking several medicines.

For these children, doctors may consider surgery to reduce or stop seizures.

A Mumbai hospital has performed more than 175 such operations in children over about three and a half years.

The hospital says 87% of these children were seizure-free at least one year after curative surgery.

The operations can remove or disconnect the part of the brain linked to seizures, or reduce seizure activity.

One six-year-old boy stopped having daily falls after corpus callosotomy.

A 10-year-old girl from Ratnagiri was seizure-free three months after a hemispherectomy.

Doctors say fewer seizures may also help some children’s development and thinking.

The hospital is working toward completing 200 surgeries.
