Chennai Mayor Orders Faster Flood Prevention Before Monsoon
Chennai is getting ready for the rainy season.
Mayor R. Priya asked city officials to finish work that can help prevent flooding.
They will clear mud from rivers, canals and drains and improve stormwater drains.
Pumps and other equipment will be checked so they can be used during heavy rain.
The city has chosen 215 places where people can find shelter in an emergency.

Officials must complete desilting of rivers, canals and drains, and speed up stormwater drainage and canal improvement works.
The Corporation has identified 215 relief camps and designated 116 kitchens to prepare food during the monsoon.
GCC will check pumps, vehicles and other machinery, and keep pumps ready in areas vulnerable to waterlogging.
Road repairs, medical camps and round-the-clock complaint response through the 1913 helpline and social media are among the planned measures.
