Genetically Modified Pig Kidney Keeps Man Alive Nine Months

In January last year, he received a kidney from a specially modified pig.
The kidney worked inside his body for 271 days, or about nine months.
Doctors changed 69 parts of the pig’s genes to help the organ avoid causing harm.
After the pig kidney was removed, Andrews used dialysis for 82 days.
He then received a kidney from a deceased human donor.
That kidney worked well during six months of follow-up, and doctors found no pig viruses or other pathogens.

Andrews had end-stage kidney disease caused by type two diabetes and a low chance of receiving a human kidney.
Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital reported the case in The Lancet.
The pig kidney was removed in October 2025, after which Andrews underwent 82 days of dialysis.
He later received a deceased-donor human kidney, which functioned well during six months of follow-up without detected pig pathogens.
