Rajnath Singh Urges Self-Reliance as HAL Delivers 2,000th Aero-Engine
HAL’s factory in Sunabeda, Odisha, delivered its 2,000th aircraft engine.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the event.
The programme also launched a second line to make the Shakti engine, which powers Indian military helicopters.
HAL developed that engine with France-based Safran Helicopter Engines.
Singh said India should be able to design, build, test and repair more engines itself.
He said this is especially important for the planned AMCA aircraft.
HAL Koraput has also made engines for several fighter aircraft and repaired more than 9,000 engines.
Singh cited proposed investment, domestic materials work and a new testing facility as steps towards greater self-reliance.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the delivery of HAL Koraput’s 2,000th aero-engine at Sunabeda, Odisha.
The programme also launched a second manufacturing line for the Shakti turboshaft engine, at an estimated cost of Rs 218 crore.
The Shakti engine, used in Indian military helicopters, was developed by HAL in collaboration with Safran Helicopter Engines.
HAL Koraput has produced engines for MiG-21, MiG-27, MiG-29 and Su-30MKI aircraft, and has overhauled more than 9,000 engines.
Singh called for stronger indigenous design, manufacturing, testing and maintenance capabilities, particularly for a high-thrust AMCA engine.

Quotes
Rajnath Singh
India’s Union Defence Minister
“Aerospace self-reliance must extend to indigenous aero-engine capability, particularly for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. A sovereign aerospace ecosystem requires indigenous capabilities across materials, design, manufacturing, testing and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO),”
indianexpress.com
“A critical component of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is its high-thrust engine. To completely indigenise AMCA, the technical know-how being developed by our engineers here will prove highly effective.”
