India's MeitY Directs Meta to Overhaul Algorithms Against Deepfakes

India's government has a department called MeitY that helps make sure internet companies follow the law.

MeitY met with Meta, a very big technology and social media company.

The government told Meta that some of the videos and posts on its platforms are fake or harmful.

Deepfakes are videos that look real but have been changed to fool people.

The government wants Meta to fix its computer programs so fake videos and misleading posts are found and removed faster.

Meta also has to write a plan explaining how it will stop this bad content.

The company was told to keep Indian people's data in India and to work with special government teams.

Meta said it agrees there are some problems and that it will work on fixing them.

The two sides will keep talking, and another meeting is planned for next week.
