Moitra alleges forced eviction from circuit house, writes to Speaker

Mahua Moitra is a member of India's Parliament elected from Krishnanagar and a leader of the Trinamool Congress party, often called the TMC.

She went to a government guest house, known as a circuit house, in Krishnanagar for an overnight stay.

The staff gave her a room and served her tea and dinner.

Late at night, an official called and told her she had to leave, saying the order had come from the top.

A written order then arrived by WhatsApp saying the guest house was closing for annual maintenance and cleaning.

A crowd gathered outside the gates and shouted slogans while she refused to leave, and she felt unsafe.

She wrote to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, asking him to protect women members of Parliament.

She said any Women's Reservation Bill would be a 'matter of jest' unless the 74 women MPs were protected.

She plans to bring a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha and may approach a court.

The district administration said she was only asked to move to alternative accommodation because of maintenance and water supply problems, while opposition leaders including Pawan Khera, Akhilesh Yadav and Md.

Selim criticised the administration.
