Pandit Umakant Gundecha is a famous singer of Dhrupad, one of the oldest styles of Indian classical music.

He came to the city of Hyderabad to teach Dhrupad in a workshop.

When he was young, Umakant and his older brother Ramakant loved to sing together in temples.

Their father helped them study music in college.

Later, the government of Madhya Pradesh gave them a scholarship to learn Dhrupad for four years.

Their teachers taught them the old way, where a student learns closely from a master, which is called the Guru-Shishya Parampara.

The brothers later started their own music school called Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal, where students from many countries come to learn.

Umakant has also set poems by famous poets to Dhrupad music, and he wants more young people to learn and enjoy this beautiful tradition.
