A consumer in Andhra Pradesh complained to a consumer commission that a restaurant charged him Rs 5 extra for a water bottle above its maximum retail price (MRP) and refused to provide free drinking water.

The consumer also alleged that the restaurant staff behaved arrogantly when questioned about the overcharge.

The consumer sought a refund of Rs 5 and compensation of Rs 50,000.

The restaurant denied the allegations, stating that the consumer left without paying the bill.

The commission held the restaurant liable for unfair trade practice and directed it to refund the excess charge of Rs 5 and pay costs of Rs 2,000.

The commission also directed the restaurant to display a warning about the health risks of soft drinks.
