Odisha brothers arrested for declaring mother dead over property
A 60-year-old woman named Aisha Bibi has two sons and six daughters.
While she was away on a religious trip in 2023, her sons told officials that she had died.
They also said she had no daughters.
Her name was then taken off the official land papers.
Her house and land were given to her two sons.
When she returned, she complained to the police.
For many days, no action was taken.
She held a hunger strike outside the police office to get attention.
Her sons were arrested, and she ended her strike when police promised to take legal action.
Two brothers, Sk Taufiq and SK Mujaidin, were arrested in Odisha's Bhadrak district for allegedly declaring their mother dead in official records and transferring her house and land to themselves.
Aisha Bibi, 60, alleged that while she was away on a pilgrimage in 2023, her sons submitted an affidavit claiming she had died about 40 years ago and that she had no daughters.
A Dhamnagar revenue inspector's report based on the affidavit led to her name being removed from the land records and her property being transferred to her two sons.
She lodged a complaint on July 10 at Dhamnagar police station against her sons, their wives and the revenue inspector; a case was registered on July 27.
Aisha staged a hunger strike outside the Bhadrak SP's office on a Friday and called it off after police assured legal action against all those found involved in the alleged fraud.
