Chhattisgarh Police Bust Interstate Currency-Doubling Racket, Arrest Seven
Police in Chhattisgarh say they stopped a group accused of tricking people with a fake money-making offer.
The group allegedly promised to turn blackened or damaged notes into new money and double the amount.
Police say the suspects used chemicals, real notes and staged demonstrations to gain trust.
They then asked victims for money to pay for chemicals, tests and official paperwork.
Seven alleged members were arrested at a resort in Khandala, Maharashtra.
Police say the suspects were trying to trick a person from Varanasi who had brought a large amount of money.
Officers recovered more than Rs 4 crore and materials used in the alleged demonstrations.
Two women had been arrested earlier, bringing the total number of arrests to nine.
Chhattisgarh police arrested seven alleged gang members from Maharashtra in a currency-doubling case.
Police said the racket promised to restore damaged notes and double victims’ money using chemicals.
More than Rs 4 crore, 17 mobile phones, black paper notes and glass plates were recovered.
The gang allegedly targeted more than 100 people across six states and Delhi since 2005.
Police said nine people have been arrested overall and are pursuing other suspected members.
