Madhya Pradesh Government Reconstitutes State Transport Authority Leadership
In Madhya Pradesh, a state in India, the government made a change to how the group that manages transport is run.
This group is called the State Transport Authority, or STA for short.
Before, the secretary of the Transport Department was the leader of this group.
That secretary, Manish Singh, also had lots of other important jobs at the same time.
A court called the High Court started asking questions about whether one person should do all of these jobs.
The court thought having so many jobs at once might be a problem.
So the government decided to make a change.
Now, a higher-ranking officer will be in charge of the State Transport Authority.
This new leader will be an Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary-level officer.
The Transport Commissioner will also help, sitting on the group as a member.
The Madhya Pradesh government has reconstituted the State Transport Authority (STA), removing powers earlier held by the Transport Department secretary.
An Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary-level officer will now head the STA as chairman, with the Transport Commissioner as a member.
The restructuring was ordered under Sections 68 (1) and (2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and takes effect immediately across Madhya Pradesh.
The move followed Madhya Pradesh High Court proceedings over the appointment of STA chairman, Transport Department Secretary Manish Singh.
The High Court had issued a notice to the Chief Secretary after considering the chairman post an office of profit under Section 68 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
