WHO sets 24-hour pandemic detection goal for countries by 2030
The WHO wants countries to detect pandemic threats within 24 hours by 2030.
It announced the target on Monday at the World Health Summit in Berlin, Germany, as part of a five-year strategy.
The plan will use AI to scan public sources for signs of health threats.
It also calls for more genetic sequencing and bioinformatics to identify infectious agents and speed the development of tests, treatments and vaccines.
A network of more than 2,000 specialists will support rapid responses.
The WHO’s Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Centre was created in 2021 after Covid-19 exposed weaknesses in preparedness, and collaborative surveillance is already in place in more than 83 countries.
The strategy aims to improve international information-sharing and early warning.
It also plans to develop secure digital systems for sharing information across borders.
