Ava DuVernay’s ‘14th’ documentary explores challenges to the Constitution

Ava DuVernay premiered 14th, a Netflix documentary about the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, at the New York Film Festival in New York City.

The amendment was adopted after the Civil War and includes a guarantee of equal protection under the law.

The film traces efforts to challenge the amendment from Reconstruction through the Jan.

6, 2021 Capitol attack and current immigration policies.

It also examines efforts by President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders to end or restrict birthright citizenship.

DuVernay says she wants viewers to feel driven to act, rather than simply hopeful.

Stacey Abrams and Sherrilyn Ifill said the November 3 midterm elections matter for the future of democracy and control of Congress.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 27 and a Netflix streaming debut on December 4, after the midterms.
