Olivia Thirlby says Y: The Last Man ended before its story could unfold

Y: The Last Man was canceled after one season in 2021, after airing 10 episodes on FX on Hulu.

The post-apocalyptic series adapts a comic book and follows a world where every mammal with a Y chromosome dies except Yorick and his pet monkey.

Olivia Thirlby played Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister, and has said the cancellation was a major blow to the cast and crew.

She believes the show was ahead of its time in exploring gender identity and how people are shaped by social systems.

Thirlby regrets the series could not fully deliver its messages or continue with the creative team, though she remains proud of what they made.

The cancellation was reportedly driven mainly by rising costs, including expenses linked to production delays and the COVID-19 shutdown.

Attempts to find the series a new home failed by January 2022, leaving its future settled.
